Autistic Adults and other Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities as well as caregivers of Autistic and otherwise disabled individuals of all ages can get a FREE general Power of Attorney.

Definitions:
General Power of Attorney: A General Power of Attorney (POA) is a crucial legal
document that allows you to appoint someone you trust as your agent, empowering them to make financial or healthcare decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. Financial decisions may include business affairs, banking, tax returns, and more, while medical decisions cover medical record access, healthcare personnel employment, and consent to treatment.
Principal: The person who is allowing someone else to act on their behalf through the Power of Attorney.
Agent: The person receiving the power to act on behalf of the principal.
FAQ:
Who is eligible? Autistic adults, adults with any Intellecutual or Developmental Disability (I/DD), and Caregivers of Autistic/I/DD individuals who live in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, or Washington Parish who need a General Power of Attorney prepared and notarized. Limited to ONE per household. The principal and the agent must both be adults with legal competence. If you are a caregiver of an Autistic/I/DD Minor you can get a POA for yourself to give someone the ability to make decisions for you should you be incapacitated.
Can I get a POA for my minor child? No, only adults can be a principal or agent on a Power of Attorney. If you are looking to retain the ability to make decisions for your child once they turn 18, you need to pursue a Continuing Tutorship (ages 15-17), or an interdiction (over 18). You can also look into Supported Decision Making as a less restrictive option.
Is there any cost? Thanks to the generosity of Morrison Law Group PLC there is no cost to participants. Participants are given the option to donate what you can to ASGNO to support our programs and services at the end of the sign-up form. Donations are not required to participate in this event.
Who needs to attend? The principal (The person who is allowing someone else to act on their behalf through the Power of Attorney.) must attend to sign the Power of Attorney. The agent is not required to attend, but is welcome to come.
What do I need to bring? A valid government-issued photo identification (ID) to the event, such as a driver’s license, state-issued photo ID, or passport.
What if I can’t make it to my appointment? You must attend the event during your appointment slot to sign and pick up your General Power of Attorney. If you cannot attend after signing up, you will forfeit your spot. Please contact us ASAP so that someone from the waitlist can be moved into your appointment time.
